Yamuna Foam Before Chhath Puja 2026: Is It Safe? 8 Tips for the Ghat

Every year, a few days before Chhath, the same picture goes around your phone: devotees standing in white froth up to their waist. This year the foam is back early. Reports from 24 October and 26 October show thick Yamuna foam near Kalindi Kunj.

Short answer: Yamuna foam is a sign of polluted water, not something to wade into casually. If you are going to the ghat for Chhath Puja 2026, here is the quick version:

  • Keep the dip short and keep water away from your face.
  • Rinse with clean water as soon as you step out.
  • Plan your water intake around the fast, especially if you keep a nirjala stretch.
  • If you have diabetes, speak to your doctor before fasting.

Why is there Yamuna foam before Chhath Puja 2026?

The foam is not a mystery, and it is not new. It comes from detergents and other chemicals in the water, made worse by the way the river is built and by the season.

CauseWhat the reports say
SurfactantsYamuna activist Bhim Singh Rawat blames heavy use of surfactants (the cleaning agents in detergents) and industrial waste, as quoted in Daily Jagran.
Barrage dropWater falling from a height near the Okhla barrage churns the polluted river into froth, the same report says.
Cold weatherLower winter temperatures make the bubbles last longer and harder to break.
Untreated dischargeOfficials told The Pioneer in May 2026 that surfactant-laden water from nearby dhobi ghats and cloth-dyeing units is part of the problem. IIT-Roorkee experts are studying whether the Kalindi Kunj barrage slope can be redesigned.

The Delhi Jal Board is expected to spray chemical defoaming agents before Chhath. The same Daily Jagran report says this approach is not believed to be sustainable. In plain words: a spray can hide the foam, but it is not a fix for what is in the water.

Is Yamuna water safe for a Chhath dip?

The Central Pollution Control Board's benchmark for faecal coliform (a bacteria count linked to sewage) is below 2,500 MPN per 100 ml, and the same limit is used for outdoor bathing. Millennium Post reported the Delhi Pollution Control Committee's (DPCC) August 2026 readings against it:

Monitoring pointFaecal coliform, August 2026 (MPN/100 ml)Against the 2,500 limit
Okhla Barrage23,000More than 9 times the limit
Asgarpur3,600Above
Palla1,400Within
Wazirabad1,100Within

Read this table with two caveats. It is monthly data from August, not today's water. And Palla and Wazirabad are where the river enters Delhi, so they say little about the stretch where most Delhi devotees gather.

What the table does show: river quality changes a lot from point to point, and the foam-affected stretch should not be treated as clean.

What can Yamuna foam do to your skin, eyes and stomach?

Doctors have warned about this in earlier Chhath seasons. Patrika reported in November 2024, citing Dr. AC Bharija, a senior dermatologist in Delhi, that polluted water can cause skin irritation, itching and rashes, and that foam-laden water can trigger allergies or asthma-like problems. If water enters the nose or throat, it can lead to internal infections.

That warning is from 2024, not a measurement of this year's foam. The river is the same one and the foam is back, so the basic precautions are still sensible.

How can you stay safer at the ghat?

These steps follow the precautions Dr. Bharija listed (moisturiser, covering the face, avoiding long stays in the water), plus basic hygiene.

WhenWhat to do
Before the dipApply moisturiser or cream on your skin.
Before the dipIf you have allergies or asthma, take extra care, or ask whether an alternate ghat or tank is available near you.
In the waterKeep the dip short. Avoid standing in the water for long stretches.
In the waterCover your face with a cloth so water does not reach your nose and mouth.
In the waterNever drink or sip the river water, and do not use it to wash utensils or fruits meant for prasad.
For the offeringIf you can, carry clean water in a vessel for the arghya and for rinsing.
After the dipRinse with clean water, change into dry clothes and apply moisturiser again.
Before eatingWash your hands with soap before touching thekua or any food.

Delhi AQI was 164 at 7 am on 26 October (CPCB "moderate"), with GRAP Stage 1 in force. If you will stand outdoors for hours at dawn and dusk, read our post on what actually works against Delhi pollution.

How do you avoid dehydration during the Chhath fast?

Chhath fasting is hard on the body, and if you keep a nirjala (no water) stretch, hydration needs planning. A review in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism notes that limiting fluids during a long fast, especially a prolonged one, is a cause of dehydration. It is a Ramadan paper, but the risk is the same when you go many hours without water.

  • Before the dry stretch: drink water steadily through the day. Do not gulp a litre at the last minute.
  • When you break the fast: sip water first, then eat. Take small amounts and give your stomach time.
  • Water quality: use clean, boiled or filtered water only. A stomach upset on top of a fast is the last thing you want.
  • Warning signs: dizziness, a pounding headache, very dark urine, extreme weakness or confusion. Break the fast and get help if they appear.

Who should speak to a doctor before fasting?

If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor before a nirjala fast. The same Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism paper reports that, in the EPIDIAR study, Ramadan fasting raised hospital admissions for severe low blood sugar about 4.7 times in type 1 diabetes and 7.5 times in type 2 diabetes. It recommends a pre-fasting consultation with the doctor or diabetes educator.

The same caution applies to people with kidney or heart disease, pregnant women and older adults. Your medicine timing may need to change.

If you have loose motions or vomiting after the ghat visit, use ORS and see a doctor. Electrolyte water is not a substitute for ORS. For more on fasting safely, read The Navratri Fasting Trap.

FAQs

When is Chhath Puja 2026?

Panchang listings put Chhath Puja from 13 to 16 November 2026, with Sandhya Arghya on 15 November, as listed by SmartPuja. Exact arghya timings change by city, so check your local panchang.

Is the white foam on the Yamuna toxic?

The foam forms from surfactants, industrial waste and churning water, and scientists quoted by Daily Jagran say it signals harmful pollutants in the water. Avoid contact where you can.

Does spraying defoamer make the Yamuna clean?

Not by itself. Daily Jagran reports that spraying chemical defoamers is not believed to be sustainable or effective.

What should I do if my skin itches after the dip?

Rinse with clean water, pat dry and apply a moisturiser. If the rash, redness or eye irritation does not settle, see a doctor.
